Lectio Divina

Divine reading, an ancient practice of prayerful Scripture meditation, designed to foster a deep, personal encounter with God.

The process involves four key steps:

lectio (reading), where you slowly and attentively read a passage of Scripture;

meditatio (meditation), in which you reflect on the text and allow it to speak to your heart;

oratio (prayer), a time for responding to God’s Word with your own prayers; and

contemplatio (contemplation), where you simply rest in God’s presence, allowing the Scripture to transform your life.

She saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb 2 and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have put him.’ 3 So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb. 4 The two ran together, but the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first; 5 he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying there, but did not go in. 6 Simon Peter, following him, also came up, went into the tomb, saw the linen cloths lying there 7 and also the cloth that had been on his head; this was not with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed. 9 Till this moment they had still not understood the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

No one who walks in the daytime stumbles, having the light of this world to see by; 10 anyone who walks around at night stumbles, having no light as a guide.’ 11 He said that and then added, ‘Our friend Lazarus is at rest; I am going to wake him up.’ 12 The disciples said to him, ‘Lord, if he is at rest he will be saved.’ 13 Jesus had been speaking of the death of Lazarus, but they thought that by ‘rest’ he meant sleep. 14 So Jesus put it plainly, ‘Lazarus has died; 15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.’ 16 Then Thomas – known as the Twin – said to the other disciples, ‘Let us also go to die with him.’ 17 On arriving, Jesus found that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days already. 18 Bethany is only about three kilometres from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went to meet him. Mary remained sitting in the house. 21 Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died, 22 but even now I know that God will grant whatever you ask of him.’ 23 Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’ 24 Martha said to him, ‘I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day.’ 25 Jesus said to her: ‘I am the resurrectionb and life. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, will live, 26 and no one who lives and believes in me will ever die. Do you believe this?’ 27 She said, ‘Yes, Lord. I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into this world.’ 28 When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying quietly, ‘The Master is here and is calling you.’ 29 Hearing this, Mary got up quickly and went to him. 30 Jesus had not yet come into the village; he was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31 The Jews who were in the house comforting Mary, seeing her get up quickly and go out, followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32 When Mary came to where Jesus was, seeing him she fell at his feet, saying, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also, he was distressed in spirit, and profoundly moved. He was born blind so that the works of God might be revealed in him. 4 ‘As long as day lasts we must carry out the work of the one who sent me. If so, how can he now see?’ 20 His parents answered, ‘We know that he is our son and that he was born blind, 21 but how he can see, we do not know, nor who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is of age: he will speak for himself.’ 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah should be banned from the synagogue. 23 This was why his parents said, ‘He is of age: ask him.’ 24 So the Jews sent a second time for the man who had been blind and said to him, ‘Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.’ 25 He answered, ‘Whether he is a sinner I don’t know; one thing I do know is that though I was blind I can now see.’ 26 They said to him, ‘What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?’ 27 He replied, ‘I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples yourselves?’ 28 At this they hurled abuse at him, ‘You are his disciple, we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.’ 30 The man replied, ‘The amazing thing is this: that you do not know where he comes from and he has opened my eyes! 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners, but God does listen to someone who reveres God and does his will. 32 Ever since the world began it is unheard of that anyone should open the eyes of someone born blind; 33 if this man were not from God, he would not have been able to do anything.’ 34 They answered and said to him, ‘You were born wholly in sin, and are you teaching us?’ And they drove him out...

Jesus said to her, ‘Give me a drink.’ 8 His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. 9 The Samaritan said to him, ‘How is it that you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?’ – for Jews do not associate with Samaritans.b 10 Jesus replied to her: ‘If you knew what God is offering and who it is saying to you, “Give me a drink”, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.’c 11 She answered, ‘Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get this living water? 12 Are you a greater man than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it, himself and his sons and his cattle?’ 13 Jesus replied: ‘Whoever drinks of this water will be thirsty again; 14 but anyone who drinks of the water that I shall give will never be thirsty again: the water that I shall give will become an inner spring of water, welling up to eternal life.’ 15 The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or go on coming here to draw water.’ 16 Jesus said to her, ‘Go and call your husband and come back here.’ 17 The woman answered him saying, ‘I have no husband.’ Jesus said to her, ‘You are right to say, “I have no husband”; 18 for you have had fived men, and the one you now have is not your husband. You spoke the truth there.’ 19 The woman said to him, ‘Sir, I see you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped on this mountain,e though you say that the place where people should worship is in Jerusalem.’ 21 Jesus said: ‘Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know; for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming – and is now here – when true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth,f for such are the worshippers whom the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.’ 25 The woman said to him, ‘I know that Messiah, the one called Christ, is coming; and when he comes he will declare everything.’ 26 Jesus said, ‘I am he, the one who is speaking to you.’ 27 At this point his disciples returned and were surprised to find him speaking to a woman, but none of them asked, ‘What do you want?’ or, ‘Why are you talking to her?’ and you have come into the rewards of their labour.’g 39 Many Samaritans of that town believed in him on the strength of the words of the woman’s witness, ‘He told me everything I have done.’ 40 So, when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them. He stayed there for two days, and 41 many more came to believe on the strength of the words he spoke to them; 42 and they said to the woman, ‘We believe no longer because of what you told us; we have heard for ourselves and we know that this is truly the Saviour of the world.’ Jesus in Galilee 43 When the two days were over, Jesus left there for Galilee, 44 for Jesus himself had borne witness that a prophet is not honoured in his own country. 45 On his arrival the Galileans received him well, 5 having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem during the festival, for they too had attended the festival.

Listen to him.’ 6 When they heard this, the disciples fell on their faces, overcome with fear. 7 But Jesus came up and touched them, saying, ‘Stand up, do not be afraid.’ 8 And when they raised their eyes they saw no one but Jesus himself, alone. 9 As they came down from the mountain Jesus gave them this order, ‘Tell no one about this vision until the Son of man has risen from the dead.’
