Dear Friend,
There are moments in every life when faith asks something more of us. We find ourselves standing at the edge of uncertainty, hearing Christ's invitation to "Come," while the winds of fear, doubt, and circumstance seem stronger than our courage. The Gospel reminds us that discipleship is not about never facing the storm—it is about learning to trust the One who walks upon the water.
In this fortnight's edition, our contributors reflect on one of the most compelling Gospel passages in Scripture: Jesus calling Peter to step out of the boat. Together, these reflections explore what it means to trust Christ, to reach beyond our fears, and to discover that God's grace is always greater than the storms we encounter.
Bishop David Walker, in When Faith Steps Out of the Boat, reflects on Peter's courageous yet fragile response to Jesus' call, reminding us that authentic faith often begins with a single step into the unknown. Virginia Ryan, in Will I Reach Out My Hand?, invites us to consider our own response to Christ's invitation and asks whether we are willing to reach beyond hesitation and place our trust in him. Virginia Fortunat continues this theme in The Hand That Steadies, offering a beautiful meditation on the reassuring presence of Christ, whose outstretched hand lifts us whenever we begin to sink beneath life's challenges.
Completing this edition, Dr Laurie Woods' reflection for the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year A opens the Scriptures with his customary insight, helping us appreciate the richness of the Sunday readings and the enduring relevance of the Gospel for our daily lives.
Together, these articles remind us that faith is not the absence of fear, but the decision to keep our eyes fixed on Christ. Whether we find ourselves confidently stepping forward, struggling amid the waves, or simply longing for the courage to begin, the Lord remains near, extending his hand and inviting us to trust him anew.
May these reflections encourage you to step forward in faith, confident that Christ walks beside you in every season of life. As always, we thank you for being part of the Lectio Divina community and invite you to share these reflections with your family, friends, and parish.
Every blessing,
The Lectio Divina Team
