In this week\u2019s Gospel John 14: 1-12 Jesus delivers his farewell discourse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It begins \u2013 do not let your heart be troubled.<\/em> I have pondered this Scripture all week, and each day has brought me new and unexpected things for my heart to be troubled about. Explosive ongoing conflicts, extremist politics, economic instability and the unrelenting disruption of technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I resonate with the disciples troubled and anxious hearts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Interestingly I find comfort in the bold questions of Thomas and Philip as they seek more explicit response from Jesus about what is going on. They are slow to understand they don\u2019t know where Jesus is going or how to get there or who the Father is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus\u2019 response to them is reassuring and personal. He shares with them the profound mystery how he and the Father are one. He asks them to believe: Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. <\/em>Believe even if you\u2019re unsure or troubled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus reiterates that their belief will empower them to bring about the Kingdom of God. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n I can imagine the bewildered expression on the faces of Thomas and Philip. I can sense their shock and struggle to comprehend what it means to know, to love and follow the Risen Lord. Jesus proclaims his cosmic identity: I am the way, the truth and the life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Thomas and Cleopas, Martha and Mary Magdeline encourage me to believe not because of their academic brilliance or erudite eloquence but because of their down-to-earth questions and desires. It is through their doubt and confusion that Jesus is revealed, and his enduring message to stop worrying and believe is heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I am reminded of the prayer that was on the back page of the Funeral Mass Booklet for Fr John Ramsay SJ. In the past it has soothed my troubled heart and reminded me of the way.
