It was<br \/>\nabout noon, 7 when a Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus<br \/>\nsaid to her, \u2018Give me a drink.\u2019 8 His disciples had gone into the town<br \/>\nto buy food. 9 The Samaritan said to him, \u2018How is it that you, a Jew,<br \/>\nask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?\u2019 \u2013 for Jews do not associate<br \/>\nwith Samaritans.b 10 Jesus replied to her:<br \/>\n\u2018If you knew what God is offering<br \/>\nand who it is saying to you, \u201cGive me a drink\u201d,<br \/>\nyou would have asked him,<br \/>\nand he would have given you living water.\u2019c<br \/>\n11 She answered, \u2018Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep.<br \/>\nWhere do you get this living water? 12 Are you a greater man than<br \/>\nour father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it, himself<br \/>\nand his sons and his cattle?\u2019 13 Jesus replied:<br \/>\n\u2018Whoever drinks of this water<br \/>\nwill be thirsty again;<br \/>\n14 but anyone who drinks of the water that I shall give<br \/>\nwill never be thirsty again:<br \/>\nthe water that I shall give<br \/>\nwill become an inner spring of water, welling up to eternal life.\u2019<br \/>\n15 The woman said to him, \u2018Sir, give me this water, so that I may<br \/>\nnever be thirsty or go on coming here to draw water.\u2019 16 Jesus said<br \/>\nto her, \u2018Go and call your husband and come back here.\u2019 17 The<br \/>\nwoman answered him saying, \u2018I have no husband.\u2019 Jesus said to her,<br \/>\n\u2018You are right to say, \u201cI have no husband\u201d; 18 for you have had fived<br \/>\nmen, and the one you now have is not your husband. You spoke the<br \/>\ntruth there.\u2019 19 The woman said to him, \u2018Sir, I see you are a<br \/>\nprophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped on this mountain,e though you<br \/>\nsay that the place where people should worship is in Jerusalem.\u2019 21<br \/>\nJesus said:<br \/>\n\u2018Believe me, woman, the hour is coming<br \/>\nwhen you will worship the Father<br \/>\nneither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.<br \/>\n22 You worship what you do not know;<br \/>\nwe worship what we do know;<br \/>\nfor salvation is from the Jews.<br \/>\n23 But the hour is coming \u2013 and is now here \u2013<br \/>\nwhen true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth,f<br \/>\nfor such are the worshippers<br \/>\nwhom the Father seeks.<br \/>\n24 God is spirit,<br \/>\nand those who worship him<br \/>\nmust worship in spirit and truth.\u2019<br \/>\n25 The woman said to him, \u2018I know that Messiah, the one called<br \/>\nChrist, is coming; and when he comes he will declare everything.\u2019<br \/>\n26 Jesus said, \u2018I am he, the one who is speaking to you.\u2019<br \/>\n27 At this point his disciples returned and were surprised to find<br \/>\nhim speaking to a woman, but none of them asked, \u2018What do you<br \/>\nwant?\u2019 or, \u2018Why are you talking to her?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>and you have come into the rewards of their labour.\u2019g<br \/>\n39 Many Samaritans of that town believed in him on the strength<br \/>\nof the words of the woman\u2019s witness, \u2018He told me everything I have<br \/>\ndone.\u2019 40 So, when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to<br \/>\nstay with them.
